| In haute couture, silk is preferred choice of medium. Haute couture dresses are hand sewn rather than through machine. From the start to the finished product, it is sewn, detailed completely by hand.
A haute couture dress is often tailored specifically to the wearers stance and body measurements and that one designer piece stands to battle the famous silk dresses of the evening. Considering the amount of effort and care taken to prepare a single dress, it does not come with any price tag; also budget is not a criterion to the consumers of these dresses.
Silk since its production in China, has found its way to the wealthy and the haute, it is a delicate, shiny and sleek material used by many designers like Betsey Johnson and Valentino, to add the glow of silk to their creations.
Beautiful fabrics from Morocco, South East Asia, India and Indonesia are used in haute clothing. Hand embroidered, pin tucking, jewel like silk buttons, chikan stitching, hand painting and appliqu are techniques mostly used in Haute couture.
Tafetta is used mostly in haute couture, Dupioni too is quite popular as it shimmers or changes color in light. Organza silk is widely used in making designer bridal dress. Rosettes and brocades are also used in haute couture as they add a texture and an effect to it. Golden and silver threads too are used extensively in these dresses. Embroidery is very intricate and detailed, though it is heavy on some garments and light on others. Brocades in haute couture are mostly intricate flower motifs.
The varieties of chiffon is used in making of veils or any headgear along with the dress, chiffon makes for an excellent veil or a headgear, as it provides with a visibility and is lightweight. The chiffon although seems delicate but actually is quite tensile in nature.
Silk ribbons have also gained importance in the fashion industry, the dress feels incomplete without a belt, and a ribbon belt is all that takes to complete it. Be it a shiny, lustrous or a matt finished. Ribbon belts come in variety of colors so you can choose one which goes best your dress. The lace is also an fabric of choice while making famous silk dresses and each one is unique. The intricacy of the lace is quite a valuable addition to the completed dress.
Silk having its low conductivity makes up for both, a summer and winter wear as it helps maintain the body heat. It being highly absorbent makes it the fabric of choice; silk dresses have the lustrous effect that gives the dress a nice color under the light.
Rohit Bal, Ritu Beri, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Wendell Rodricks are few of the haute couture designers in India whose creations are famous. Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Ralph Lauren are some of the fashion labels of the international market.
